Jamie Carragher caught spitting at girl

Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher says he’s “devastated” over spitting scandal

“I just hope this one incident is not the real me.”

Over the weekend, Carragher was filmed spitting out of his window in an incident near Old Trafford after United’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Liverpool. The video saw Carragher goaded over the result of the match, leading to Carragher spitting out of his car window in the direction of the Manchester fans including a 14-year old girl.

“Obviously, I was in a rage, you’ve seen the video footage, I’ve lost my temper,” he said.

“To do what I did, I can’t explain it. I’m sorry for what I’ve caused for that family, obviously Sky Sports who I represent also, and I can only give words now after the event about what I think about what I did, which was disgusting and unacceptable.”

“I am just devastated that the young girl was caught in the middle of the altercation, really, the problem and the words were with the father,” he added.

“I am sorry to the father, of course I am, but even more so for bringing a young girl into it and obviously the rest of the family who I am sure are not used to being in the media spotlight.”

When asked how he’d feel if his own daughter had been spat at, Jamie added: “I’d be devastated, I’d be as angry as anyone could possibly be, so I totally get the disappointment in the family involved.”

Carragher has now been suspended from his duties as a football analyst for Sky, with the broadcaster saying that his actions were “well below the standards we expect of our people”.
