Referee kicks player Diego Carlos

I cannot believe what I witnessed in a Ligue 1 game recently between Nantes and Paris Saint-Germain. I’ve seen a lot of bizarre things in football over the year, plenty involving referees too but I have never ever seen this before.

The game was in injury time and PSG were on the attack. Unfortunately the Nantes’ defender Diego Carlos was chasing back to defend as you do and referee Tony Chapron was obviously running in the same direction to keep up with play. However, the referee then cut across the path of Carlos and the two tangled legs with Chapron falling to the floor.

As Chapron fell and rolled though he then spotted Carlos near him and kicked out at him in what can only be described as a moment of madness. What happened next though was truly amazing, Carlos was already on a yellow card for an earlier incident and then for this, was shown another yellow card and so sent off.

“Nantes chairman Waldemar Kita said Chapron should be banned for six months for the “scandalous” decision. But he added: “I do not want to believe he did it on purpose.”

Anyway, take a look yourself:

Paris Saint Germain won the game one nil thanks to a Angel di Maria goal which means that PSG are still way out on top by eleven point lead with eighteen games still to go.
