At a time when the global village that we are all a part of needed to be at its tightest ever, numerous people at important positions have turned their back on people in crisis. These actions provided an embarrassingly poor image of humanity that will take some time to be undone. Having said that, what I must also need to profess is that a lot of good work is already being done.

Arsenal Football Club became the first football club in England to sit up and take some much-needed action to combat the alarming refugee crisis that Europe is currently facing. The Gunner’s utilised their exalted position in the world by committing to donate a portion of their ticket income from their match against Stoke City.

Similarly, the Gunner’s Premier League rivals, Everton, have done something similar to help boost the morale of some refugee children. While they did not donate anything towards this cause, they presented a small number of refugee children the opportunity to enjoy a once in a lifetime moment amidst the current dilemmas that they find themselves in. The Goodison Park-based team chose a small bunch of refugee children to step out onto the field hand in hand with the club’s stars as mascots.

While numerous bigwigs all over the continent have turned a blind eye on this current refugee crisis, it gives me great happiness to see that sport is coming together to play a part in making the world a better place.
