A referee in the Brazilian Serie B sent off a player after he was discovered wearing the same shirt number as a teammate

Discipline is a big part of any sport and very often we see the men who officiate the biggest games attract the limelight as much as the players playing in it. It’s a tough job being a referee, and I certainly wouldn’t fancy being one. But for one referee though, things got really interesting. A Brazilian Serie B game featuring Mogi Mirim and Bragantino saw one of the most bizarre sending offs ever!

Mogi Mirim centre back Paulao received a second yellow card after it was discovered that he was wearing the same shirt number as one of his teammates. The Brazilian player was seen sporting the number 3 shirt, which actually belonged to his teammate Fábio Sanches. Paulao began the game with the number 4 on his back but he decided to switch to a fresh shirt at half time. Little did he know that he was switching shirt numbers as well!

This snafu was noticed by the officials and the referee sent the player off as soon as he became aware of it! I’m sure the ref won’t be sending players off for this reason anytime soon! Mogi Mirim though won’t see anything funny here as they ultimately ended up losing the match thanks to a 93rd minute winner that swung the game in favour of their opponents to put the scores at 3-2.
