England’s most high profile referee announced his retirement from professional refereeing earlier in the week. Howard Webb called time on a 25 year long career as a professional referee so he could take up a position as the Technical Director of the Professional Game Match Official Limited (PGMOL). 43 year old Webb’s new position will require him to keep an eye on the overall standards and technical direction of match officials. He is also required to “take a public-facing role, informing and educating on refereeing matters”.
His career is a glorious one indeed as he is officiated numerous high profile matches starting from the 2010 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands to the Champions League final between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, however he was always criticized for being particularly generous towards a certain English football club. And on the day he announced his retirement the internet was ablaze with some of the best Howard Webb memes in a long time.
